Pediatric cancer patients may experience severe pain and anxiety during the dressing changes of central venous catheters (CVCs). CVCs can be used for chemotherapy and other treatments, but CVC dressing changes can cause discomfort to the patient. During this process, the use of distraction methods like a kaleidoscope can be effective in reducing the pain and anxiety experienced by children.

The aim of the research is to evaluate the effect of using a kaleidoscope in reducing pain and anxiety during CVC dressing changes in pediatric cancer patients.

The effect of the kaleidoscope was analyzed by measuring the anxiety levels of the children before, during, and after the procedure, and the pain levels during and after the procedure. In the study, lower pain and anxiety scores were observed in children who used a kaleidoscope during CVC dressing changes.

Nurses play a critical role in recognizing and alleviating the emotional and physical distress of children during this process. The research emphasizes the importance of distraction techniques in determining nurses' pain management strategies. It has been revealed how beneficial an easy-to-use and effective tool like a kaleidoscope is in reducing the pain and anxiety experienced by children during procedures.

These results may encourage the more widespread use of distraction methods in pediatric oncology treatments. These non-pharmacological approaches play a significant role in improving children's treatment experiences. The research reveals the value of distraction techniques like a kaleidoscope in reducing pain and anxiety during pediatric cancer treatment and emphasizes the need for further research into such innovative strategies.
